Chapter 14: Lip Service

KIT ROLLED over, slowly brought to wakefulness by the cold against his back where Jonathan had been during the night. He lay there for a minute, listening to the water running in the bathroom, figuring that was why Jonathan was up so early. The water shut off after a few minutes, but Jonathan didn’t reappear. Heaving a sigh, Kit sat up, looking down at Devon still asleep next to him. The evening had been a little awkward after their scene. Jonathan had been subdued, not really responding to Kit’s teasing, but Devon had drawn him aside, telling him to give Jonathan time, that for some people it took a while to let go of their headspace after an intense session. Kit certainly didn’t have the experience to argue with that, but it was morning now, and Jonathan was still acting strange. He nudged Devon until his eyes opened. “Jonathan took a page out of your book and disappeared. I don’t think I like my lovers leaving in the morning without so much as a kiss.”

Yawning and running a hand through his hair, Devon pushed up on one elbow to peer over Kit’s shoulder, as if to confirm that Jonathan was really gone from the bed. He still felt a bit guilty about having lost himself so much in his own pleasure at the end of their session the night before that he’d left Jonathan to find his own release. They’d all been too tired after dinner to do more than nestle together and share a few kisses before falling asleep, but it hadn’t escaped Devon’s attention that Jonathan had taken the side of the bed facing the wall. He’d hoped a good night’s sleep would provide enough distance to make it easier to discuss how things had gone during the scene—what had worked and what hadn’t—but that would be hard to do with Jonathan missing.

“Probably took his camera and went looking for something to shoot. He mentioned wanting to do that yesterday,” Devon said, hoping it was nothing more than that.

“You’re probably right,” Kit agreed, bending down and kissing him. “Feeling better this morning?”

Deepening the kiss felt so good that Devon pulled Kit closer, cupping the firm buttocks in his palms to mold their bodies together until they both began to stir again in response. “Feeling bloody wonderful,” he admitted. “What about you? Back still feeling all right? I did work you pretty hard for a first time.”

Kit rubbed against Devon like a cat in heat. “My back’s fine,” he assured his lover. “And I promise I’ll tell you if it bothers me, regardless of the circumstances.” His desire building again, Kit felt Jonathan’s absence keenly. “Let’s see if we can find our king,” he suggested. “I wouldn’t want to start anything fun without him.”

Nodding in agreement, Devon let Kit pull out of his arms. His conscience was pricking him for not having clearly ended the previous day’s scene before they left the porch. He’d been so
